Cécile McLorin Salvant

Cécile McLorin Salvant was born and raised in Miami, Florida of a French mother and a Haitian father. She started classical piano studies at 5, and began singing in the Miami Choral Society at 8. In 2007, Cécile moved to Aix-en-Provence, France, to study law as well as classical and baroque voice. It was there, that she started learning improvisation, instrumental and vocal repertoire ranging from the 1910s on, and sang with her first band. In 2009, after a series of concerts in Paris, she recorded her first album "Cécile", with Jean-François Bonnel's Paris Quintet. A year later, she won the Thelonious Monk competition in Washington D.C. Cécile performs unique interpretations of unknown and scarcely recorded jazz and blues compositions. She focuses on a theatrical portrayal of the jazz standard and composes music and lyrics which she also sings in French, her native language as well as in Spanish. She enjoys popularity in Europe and in the United States, performing in clubs, concert halls, and festivals accompanied by renowned musicians like Jean-Francois Bonnel, Rodney Whitaker, Aaron Diehl, Dan Nimmer, Sadao Watanabe, Jacky Terrasson, Archie Shepp, and Jonathan Batiste. Cécile released two CDs so far “Cécile and the Jean-François Bonnel Paris Quintet” and her latest release, “Woman Child” with Aaron Diehl, Rodney Whitaker, Herlin Riley and James Chirillo. After the enthusiastic response at the opening night of the Jazzfestival 2013, Cécile is back for five concerts in Marians Jazzroom, exclusive in Switzerland!

George Robert / Bob Mintzer Quintet

The alto and tenor saxophones are two brothers of the same family, and throughout  jazz history, there have been legendary teams of saxophonists who joined forces to create new and exciting music. Among others, Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh, Phil Woods and Budd Johnson, Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, and now George Robert and Bob Mintzer. Both men have been longtime close friends and colleagues, ever since the early 80’s. George Robert and Bob Mintzer share a common passion for the music, not only as performers, but also as composers and arrangers. Bob Mintzer is a leading figure in the jazz world as a composer, creating a very personal style of big band writing. Every day, somewhere around the planet, there is a big band playing a Bob Mintzer chart. Bob Mintzer is also one of the leading tenor saxophonists in jazz today. George Robert has written more than 100 compositions, which can be heard on over 50 albums. George is internationally recognized as one of the top alto saxophonists in the jazz world today. Both musicians are great admirers of Cannonball Adderley  and John Coltrane, who made a landmark recording  in 1959 together called „Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago“ (Mercury/Verve Records). It has become a classic. George & Bob will not only pay tribute to these two giants of the saxophone and revisit some of the music of this historical recording, but also play newly composed original compositions that both men wrote specially for this band, as well as jazz standards. Such a team could not come without a stellar trio. Russell Ferrante, Rufus Reid and Byron Landham  represent the very best that jazz has to offer. These three gentlemen have such an impressive track record in jazz history. This will be without a doubt a very inspired week and a highlight!
