Benny Green possesses the history of jazz at his fingertips. Combine mastery of keyboard technique with decades of real world experience playing with no one less than the most celebrated artists of the last half century, and it's no wonder Green has been hailed as perhaps the most exciting, hard-swinging, hard-bop, pianist to ever emerge from Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Born in New York in 1963, Benny Green grew up in Berkeley, California, and began classical piano studies at the age of seven, and by twelve he was playing Jazz. Benny moved to New York in 1983, where he worked wich Betty Carter for four years and with Art Blakey from 1987 to 1989. In 1989 he left Art Blakey's band to prove himself. He then worked with Freddie Hubbard and Ray Brown, through whom he has picked up an appreciation for one of his greatest idols, Oscar Peterson. From 1997 on, Benny resumed his freelance career, leading his own trios, accompanying singers like Diana Krall, and concentrating in his solo piano performances and duets with guitarist Russell Malone. Along the way. Benny has appeared on a guest performer on over one hundred (!) recordings. This week, Benny is paying tribute to not only his mentor, but to one of the masters of Jazz: Art Blakey. This sextet was compiled by Benny specifically for this truly special occasion – exclusively to be heard and experienced at the 40th International Jazzfestival Bern!
